Can you introduce yourself briefly and share your origin?
I’m Santiago Ribeiro, a Portuguese artist from Coimbra. Coimbra is a city rich in history and culture, influencing my journey as an artist. I’ve always been passionate about surrealism, an art style that mixes reality with dreams and imagination. This passion has led me to create and showcase my artwork in Portugal and worldwide.
I’ve organized and participated in many exhibitions, sharing my unique vision of surrealism. One of my most significant projects is “International Surrealism Now,” which started in 2010. It’s the largest surrealism exhibition in the 21st century and includes artists from all over the globe.
What is your educational background in art?
My formal education in art began with a Technical Course in Arts at Avelar Brotero Comprehensive School in Coimbra. This foundational education gave me vital skills and knowledge in various art techniques.
2006 I furthered my studies at the Higher Education School in Coimbra. During this time, I organized and participated in many exhibitions. They were crucial for honing my art and expanding my understanding of contemporary art.
What is the title of your project?
My main project is called “Surrealism Now.” It’s like a big art show where artists share their surrealistic art worldwide. It’s the biggest surrealist show of its kind! I’m proud of it because I’ve put a lot of work into making it happen. I’ve worked hard to bring all these artists together. They come from around the globe so that everyone can enjoy their surrealism. It’s been an incredible experience!
What makes you want to make art, and where do you get your ideas?
I love making art because it lets me explore the hidden parts of our minds. Our thoughts, dreams, and feelings are like a treasure trove of inspiration for me. Sometimes, I get ideas from my dreams or experiences. Other times, I’m inspired by everyday life’s strange and magical moments. When I create art, I’m not expressing myself; I’m sharing a piece of my inner world with others. And when people connect with my art emotionally, it’s the most fantastic feeling.
Can you talk about the different things you’ve made before?
I’ve made lots of different kinds of art over the years. Some of them are abstract paintings, all about using shapes and colors in exciting ways. Then there are dreamscapes, like scenes from dreams, and they can be magical and weird. I’ve also made detailed compositions that mix real things with imaginary stuff. Each piece of art I create is like a journey into the hidden parts of our minds, and I want people to look at them and think about all sorts of things.
Can you tell us about special projects you’ve done?
One of my special projects is the “International Surrealism Now” exhibition, which began in 2010. The project has grown and is now the largest surrealist exhibition in the 21st century. It showcases works from many global artists and has been featured in major cities like Berlin, New York, and Paris.
The whole point of the exhibition is to show people how surrealism is still alive and kicking in today’s world. We want everyone to understand better and appreciate this unique style of art.

I have participated in and organized various events that highlight surrealism and contemporary art. One event was at a place called the Roque Gameiro House in Lisbon. It was a cozy spot where people could see surreal art up close and personal. There was an event at the Fellini Gallery in Berlin. The gallery had a fun vibe that matched the weird and wonderful art on display.
I also got to show my art at the LuminArte Gallery in Dallas. It was a great chance to introduce surrealism to new people and have exciting conversations about what the art meant. There was an event at the Dorothy Gallery in Paris. Being in such a famous city and sharing my art with people worldwide was super cool.
Your art is unique. How do you make it so memorable?
My art is unique because it mixes real life with imagination in a relaxed way. I want each piece to make people think and feel something special. So, I use bright colors, details, and surreal combinations. This makes my art stand out and gets people thinking about what it all means. When someone looks at my art, I want them to feel like they’re exploring a new world of hidden meanings and personal feelings.
How did you start working with other artists?
I started working with other artists by participating in art exhibitions and projects. By networking within the art community, I met other artists like me who were passionate about surrealism. Working with these like-minded creatives has been vital. It’s helped surrealism reach more people. Being part of this artistic community has inspired and supported us all.
Can you describe your artistic style and the themes you explore in your paintings?
My artistic style is surrealist, which means my paintings are like dreams brought to life. I like to explore themes like dreams and the weird parts of being human. In my paintings, you’ll see many funky shapes and bright colors that make everything feel magical. Each painting is like stepping into a new world where anything can happen. It’s all about capturing the beauty and mystery of surrealism.
What do you want people to understand from your art, especially at festivals?
I want people to understand the power of the subconscious mind and the beauty of the surreal. I want my art to make people think and feel things, to spark their imagination and emotions. At festivals, where all kinds of people come together, I hope my art creates a shared experience that helps everyone see surrealism in a new light. It’s all about showing how surrealism can take us to places we never imagined.

Do you use computers or gadgets to make your art?
I mainly use traditional tools like oil paints and canvas for my art. But sometimes, I also use digital tools to help me out. These tools let me explore ideas, try different compositions, and add a modern twist to my classic surreal style. Using digital technology opens up new ways to create and improve my work quality.
What do you hope for your art in the future?
In the future, I hope that more and more people will see and be inspired by my art worldwide. I want to keep pushing the limits of surrealism and make art that speaks to everyone, no matter where they come from. Also, I’d love to grow the “Surrealism Now” project. I want to bring together more artists and show contemporary surrealism to a broader audience. It’s all about sharing the magic of surrealism with as many people as possible!
