Special Tribute: Computer Music Magazine
Remembering Computer Music Magazine (3)

Computer Music magazine, a cornerstone in the world of digital music production that ceased publication after a remarkable 25-year journey, deserves recognition for shaping generations of electronic producers. From its launch in 1998 to its final issue in November 2024, this pioneering publication revolutionized how creators approached music production and left an indelible mark on electronic music culture.

Computer Music Digital Revolution

Launched in October 1998 by Future plc in the UK, Computer Music emerged during the early days of desktop computing when creating music on personal computers was still an emerging concept. As editor Andy Price reflected, “Back when we first started, computer music-making was still something of a novel new approach for the aspiring producer. This magazine saw the echoes of today’s software-dominated landscape in those pioneering early programs. We weren’t wrong, were we?”

The publication rode the wave of rapidly accelerating home computing power, documenting and influencing the dramatic evolution of music production technology over a quarter century. From primitive software sequencers to sophisticated digital audio workstations, Computer Music chronicled every step of the transformation.

Legacy of Innovation and Accessibility

Computer Music’s impact extended far beyond its pages. The magazine became renowned for comprehensive tutorials that demystified complex production techniques and honest gear reviews that helped producers make informed decisions.

Perhaps most significantly, the CM Plugin Suite, a collection of free software instruments and effects bundled with each issue, became an invaluable resource for producers worldwide. Price pondered, “I can’t help but wonder how much music Computer Music has had a hand in bringing to life over the years. What a magazine.”

This commitment to providing quality tools democratized music production, allowing creators with limited budgets to access professional-grade software that would have otherwise been out of reach. For many bedroom producers who later became established artists, these tools were their first introduction to serious music production.

The End of an Era

Rising print production costs ultimately led to the consolidation of Computer Music’s content into MusicRadar.com, alongside its sister publication Future Music. While the physical magazine may no longer exist, its expert knowledge and editorial vision continue to live on in digital form, ensuring that its valuable resources remain accessible to the electronic music community.

For subscribers, Future plc provided refunds for the remaining balance of subscriptions within 7-10 days following the final issue, a testament to the publisher’s commitment to its loyal readership even as the publication ended.

A Lasting Influence on Electronic Music Culture

For a generation of electronic music producers, Computer Music wasn’t just a publication, it was a mentor, a guide, and often the first introduction to the possibilities of digital music creation. From bedroom producers to chart-topping artists, countless creators were influenced by its guidance.

The magazine brought computer music production to every home, witnessing and facilitating the shift from expensive professional studios to powerful home setups. This transformation fundamentally changed how electronic music is created and who could create it, opening doors for diverse voices that might never have been heard in previous eras.
