What’s the Name of your project, And what does the name stand for?
I publish my designs under Altered Visions. Initially, I thought Altered States Visions would have been more accurate for the type of images I make through AI, but then I thought that it was too long and more challenging to remember, while I liked how Altered Visions sounds.
Which country are you from?
I was born in Italy, but I live in Spain nowadays.
Describe your altered vision when designing.
This is the era of AI-generated images, like it or not. I love using this tool and aim to make an original psychedelic, surreal, glitch style recognizable when you see it. It’s easy to use AI image generators to make the images everyone is doing, using the styles everyone is using, recycling the prompts everyone is using, and making images that look all the same or that copy too much from real artists. AI is a new tool to make art, and I want to use it to make art in a new way. I mostly make surreal and psychedelic images using a lot of glitches and distortion. I am also a photographer, and I really love to generate images with AI that mix up realistic elements that, thanks to AI, can look as real as a real photo, with surreal and psychedelic elements, many times trying to have as result, a scene as watched through the eyes of someone who is experiencing an altered state of consciousness (from this comes the name Altered Visions).
What inspired you to become a designer, and how do you stay creatively inspired?
I do not see myself as a graphic designer; I am just a creative person who doesn’t have the drawing and painting skills to create the kind of images I would like to develop and use AI as a tool to do so, trying to harness AI’s unique capabilities. Inspiration comes and goes. It is not something you can force. I believe in Karma, knowing that inspiration and creativity will come at the right time.
Please walk us through your creative process.
You must understand that AI-generated images are not comparable with masterpieces drawn and painted by “real human artists” and can take months, if not years, to complete. AI generates images are done in a few seconds. So you can also imagine how many photos an “AI artist” can develop in a day… easily hundreds! So, it is difficult to say which ones are my favorites. My challenges are the same as those many other AI creators face: understanding how the AI reacts to your commands and knowing what to write in a prompt to obtain your thoughts.
How do you describe your Artistic Style?
In two words: Psychedelic Surrealism. I like to push the boundaries more deeply by mixing elements like retro images and cutting-edge ultra-psychedelic shapes. I often use Manga-style Asian figures, fantasy creatures, aliens, and skulls. My love for Psytrance music attracts me to design mangled Synthesizer-based creatures and figures.
What steps do you take from concept to final design?
I don’t take any steps. I just let my creativity flow and do whatever I am inspired to do whenever I have inspiration, for pure fun. Sometimes, I play around with the AI and end up with new ideas based on my old ones.
Can you describe your experience with different design software and tools?
I started using AI image generators less than a year ago. Among all paid applications, I chose to make images through Microsoft Bing’s Image Generator, which uses Dall-E 3. Again, I am not a graphic designer and do not follow trends.
What advice would you give aspiring AI creatives such as yourself?
Just do what you do for the pleasure of doing it. If you do it for the money or the fame, it doesn’t work. Art and creativity must flow freely.
