Carin Dickson is a South African-based visual artist specializing in decorative shaded environments, large-scale art installations & bespoke stage designs. And décor at Psychedelic festivals worldwide. Carin has cultivated a unique tribe of followers and collaborators, showcasing her work at some of the globe’s most iconic psychedelic events.

We recently had the opportunity to study this wonder woman who’s often been called the visual spellbinder of dance floors across continents. We delve into her journey with art, the evolution of her work, and her perspective on the role of visual aesthetics in enhancing festival experiences.

 

What inspired Artscapes Journey?

Artscape inception stems from Carin’s lifelong passion for art and her serendipitous encounter with the vibrant energy of the trance scene. It all began when she attended her first trance party in Johannesburg in 1997. “The sense of belonging I felt amidst the pulsating beats ignited a spark, and I knew I had found my calling.”

Over time, Carin’s fascination with the festival decor and visual landscapes grew, inspiring her to channel her creativity into something more meaningful. Thus, Artescape was born, driven by a desire to create immersive art experiences that transcend the ordinary and elevate the festival atmosphere to new heights.

Which festivals have your creations graced, and can you name a few notable ones?

I’ve had the privilege of serving almost all South African festivals, and internationally, my work has added to the magic of Boom Festival, Ozora, and Universo Parallels. I’ve painted dance floors in locales ranging from Lebanon to Japan—each a unique canvas contributing to global trance culture.

Do you apply your artistic talents to non-trance events as well?

Indeed, I have slowly branched out into more commercial events. Nonetheless, my heart orients primarily towards the Psytrance scene, a community that resonates deeply with my artistic principles and ethics.

 

How does décor influence the festival experience?

Over the years, the decor has become a quintessential element of a festival’s identity. An exquisite backdrop can significantly enhance attendees’ experiences. I take pride in creating immersive environments that serve as a visual feast and harmoniously augment the dance floor’s collective energy.

 

What are some unexpected challenges when working with festivals abroad?

Aside from the obvious language barriers and logistical challenges of working abroad, it’s surprising for many to learn that all my grand designs start as modest pencil drawings on A3 paper. As for unattained career goals, I aspire to outshine my previous projects continuously, and I dream of taking on large-scale events with generous budgets that allow for unrestrained creativity.

How do you approach designing art installations for festivals and events?

A spirit of experimentation and exploration guides my creative process. It begins with a deep dive into the client’s vision and the unique characteristics of the event space. From there, we draw inspiration from diverse sources, ranging from nature and culture to technology and spirituality.

Sketching out initial concepts, we refine our ideas through iteration, constantly pushing the boundaries of creativity. Whether hand-painting backdrops or experimenting with new materials and techniques, we strive to create art that not only delights the senses but also tells a story and evokes emotion.

What have been some of the highlights of your career so far?

Working with festivals both locally and internationally has been a truly enriching experience. Some of the highlights of my career include collaborating with iconic events. Each project presents challenges and opportunities, allowing me to push the boundaries of my creativity and expand my artistic horizons.

Seeing festival-goers immerse themselves in our creations and witnessing the transformative power of art firsthand has been incredibly rewarding and a constant source of inspiration.

 

Please share an aspect of your job that might surprise people and any ambitions you’re still chasing.

Most people are surprised to learn that my elaborate dance floor designs start as pencil drawings on A3 paper. As for the road ahead, my ambitions are tied to redefining and surpassing my last project, reaching for events with the scope and budget to embody the boundless realms of imagination I strive to create.
