Can you briefly introduce yourself and share your origin?

I’m a representative of Mumok, the Museum of Modern Art in Vienna, Austria. Our museum is proud of its tradition and exhibits cutting-edge art from many cultures. Mumok is in the bustling cultural center of Vienna. I’m all about sparking conversations about art, trying new things, and appreciating creativity in all its forms. I love to showcase groundbreaking artwork from talented artists around the globe. Whether you love art or are curious about what’s new and exciting in the art world, Mumok is the place to be.

What is the title of your project?

The title of my project is “Vertigo“: Op Art and a History of Deception, 1520–1970. It’s like a big show that explores two remarkable things: Op Art and how artists trick our eyes. Op Art is all about making art that plays tricks on what we see. From funky patterns to crazy colors, it’s like a visual adventure! It also looks back from the 16th century to the 1970s. Back then, artists were already using tricks to fool people’s eyes. So, my project shows how these tricks have evolved.

Can you explain the concept behind your exhibition, Vertigo?

The Vertigo exhibition showcases mind-bending artworks that play tricks on your eyes! It’s called Op Art, like a magic show for your brain. The paintings in the exhibition create illusions of patterns in motion. They craft shapes that alter their appearance when viewed from different angles.

The idea behind the Vertigo exhibition is to take you on a fun adventure through these mesmerizing artworks. It’s like stepping into a world where nothing is entirely what it seems, and every painting or sculpture has a surprise waiting for you.

How do visual tricks play a role in the creation and experience of Op Art?

Visual tricks are essential in the creation and experience of Op Art. Artists use geometric patterns, contrasting colors, and precise designs to create optical illusions. These illusions make still images appear to move or change, challenging how we’ve seen space, form, and movement.

These visual tricks disrupt our usual way of seeing things. They make us question what we see and how our eyes and brain interpret visual information. Op Art plays with our senses, creating a dynamic experience. It engages viewers, asking them to question visual reality’s stability.

Can you explain the role of light and motion in your works?

Light and motion are crucial in my artwork. They help create a more engaging experience for viewers. I can use different lighting techniques, including blacklight and dynamic lights. With them, I can play with shadows, reflections, and contrasts. This brings the art to life with shifting dynamics. I also use kinetic sculptures and moving elements in my works. These add movement and make the art feel unpredictable and exciting. Light and motion blur the line between reality and illusion.

Could you give more details about the events you’ve collaborated on?

I worked with renowned institutions like the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart, and the “Vertigo” exhibition has reached a broader audience. These collaborations are very valuable. They allow me to share and exchange ideas and resources and help me expand the reach of my exhibitions. Working with Kunstmuseum Stuttgart means I can display “Vertigo” in different cities, letting more people see and enjoy the art.

These partnerships are about more than organizing the show. They’re about sharing artistic ideas and promoting cultural exchange. By teaming up with other art organizations, I aim to make modern art more exciting and easier for everyone to enjoy. These collaborations also brought me new ideas and styles, making the exhibition even better for visitors.

What inspires you to make art, and where do your creative ideas originate?

My inspiration stems from various sources, such as historical precedents, scientific discoveries, and contemporary artistic practices. I’m particularly intrigued by the intersection of art and perception. I draw from this fascination to explore new visual experimentation and sensory experience realms.  My creative ideas often arise from a desire to challenge conventional modes of seeing and understanding. I strive to push the limits of art. I engage audiences in thought-provoking ways.

How did your collaborations with other artists?

Collaborations with other artists are central to my creative process. By working with fellow artists, I can blend different perspectives, skills, and talents to enrich my Op Art creations. Together, we explore new ideas and techniques, pushing the boundaries of what’s possible. This collaboration helps me grow as an artist and create more exciting and impactful artworks. It’s not about my art; it’s about building a sense of community and teamwork within the artistic world.

What themes do you often explore in your art, and why?

In my art, I often explore themes like how we see things, what’s real, and what’s not. These fascinating ideas make people think and question what they know. By playing with concepts like space and time, I want to spark curiosity and get people talking about the world around them. My art reveals fresh perspectives, inspiring deeper contemplation of life.

I aim to provoke thought, stimulate curiosity, and encourage viewers to question their world understanding. My art is a catalyst for dialogue, thought, and change. It invites viewers to explore new views and engage with the complexities of being human.

What challenges do you face when creating Op Art?

Creating Op Art poses unique challenges because it relies on precise shapes, illusions, and sensory tricks. Getting the right look requires careful planning, technical skill, and attention to detail. Balancing looks and ideas is hard. Op art aims to engage viewers in both mind and senses.

Creating Op Art comes with challenges. I precision-craft shapes and colors to conjure convincing illusions. It’s also tough to balance making the art look good while also having deep meaning and engaging audiences with an experience that evokes strong emotional responses. But I see these challenges as chances to push my art further. I create an enthralling experience.

I connect with my audience in different ways. I engage people of all ages and backgrounds through exhibitions, talks, and online platforms, including my website and social media channels. I create experiences that make them think and feel. Interactive displays and discussions encourage them to explore and share their thoughts.

My website and social media help me reach more people and share my work. My goal is to make art enjoyable and meaningful for everyone.
