We got to sit down with the duo behind the mesmerizing decor of the psytrance scene. MAE & MOA began their artistic journey in 1991. They turned psytrance parties into kaleidoscopic wonders. Jerome is from France, and Mel is from Germany. Together, they are known as MAE & MOA. They have led the way in UV decoration.

They create captivating atmospheres and psychedelic realms. They have left a significant mark on the electronic music scene. From their early days, they introduced UV decoration to European psytrance parties. They have performed at some of the world’s biggest festivals. Their art has been captivating audiences for over two decades.

Here’s a glimpse into their fascinating journey and artistic evolution:

What is the name of your project?

We named our project MAE & MOA. We explore how design changes perception.

Please introduce yourselves – where are you from, and where are you based?

We are Jerome from France and Mel from Germany. Our journey began in 1991, and we are currently based in Europe.

Which scene are you most associated with?

We are deeply entrenched in the psytrance scene, where our artistic flair finds its fullest expression.

Describe your decoration style in short.

Our style is a fusion of art and space. It aims to create harmony with vibrant and imaginative designs.

What kind of art do you create? (Sculpting Painting, etc)?

Our art takes many forms, including intricate sculptures and expansive paintings. It is designed to captivate and transform spaces.

Please share your journey as a Decor Artist. How did it all start?

Our journey began in the early ’90s. We met at a party in Cologne, Germany. We originally started building the team with Flo in 1995. When Flo left, Jerome continued alone until I joined in 2002.

We decorated parties and festivals and introduced UV decoration to the psytrance scene across Europe. Over the years, our passion for changing spaces has led us to work on big projects, allowing us to refine our techniques and expand our horizons.

We are working with the Esoteric family and aim to take the Ascension Stage to new heights. We are still known for our impressive UV backdrops, but we have evolved to include large lycra and LED installations.

This transformation has transformed imaginative landscapes into captivating multidimensional experiences. Our journey showcases a seamless blend of art forms and continues to captivate audiences worldwide.

Please walk us through your portfolio and highlight the projects you’re particularly proud of.

Throughout our career, we’ve had the honor of decorating some of the most famous festivals. These include Boom Festival, Airbeat One, Indian Spirit, and Voov Experience. Each project holds a special place in our hearts. They showcase our growth and creativity.

How do you approach a new decoration project? What steps do you take from concept to final product?

We used bed sheets and spray paint to make backgrounds for art, trying to change how spaces looked. As we improved, we started using brushes and airbrushes. We also used bright paint on enormous canvases. We made giant sets of decorations up to 80 meters long. Now, we use airbrushes and stencils on stretchy fabric for overhead coverings. We print digital art onto fabric. We’re now including LED lights and mapping tech in our artwork. We still use the usual painting and sculpting methods.

Can you describe your experience with different design software and tools?

We initially relied on painting and sculpting, but we’ve embraced technology. We’ve added design software, LEDs, and mapping to our projects. We stay updated through continuous experiments and research, keeping our work innovative and cutting-edge.

What materials do you use for decor projects?

Our projects often involve lycra, UV paint, LED lights, and digital prints on fabrics. We get materials from many suppliers. We tailor our choices to fit each project’s needs. We aim to make beautiful, stunning spaces.

What’s the central theme of your decor artwork?

Our artwork often explores themes of psychedelic exploration, cosmic landscapes, and harmonious balance. We aim to evoke a sense of wonder, unity, and transcendence through our creations.

Describe successful project collaboration with promoters and artists.

Working with promoters and fellow artists has been enriching. It allows for diverse perspectives and creative synergy. One memorable collaboration was with the Vienna-based Phoenix Firedancers. We combined our decoration skills with their performance art talent, creating captivating shows and experiences.

Faced project limitations affecting creative vision? How to manage?

Challenges arise, but we strive to find creative solutions that complement our vision and the client’s needs. Flexibility and open communication are key. They help us navigate such situations while maintaining the integrity of our artistry.

Have experience in video or animation creation?

Our primary focus is on physical installations, but we’ve also dabbled in multimedia, adding video and animations to enhance the experience.

How does contemporary decor differ from traditional designs?

Modern decor art often uses technology in many fields, blurring the line between the physical and digital worlds. Our decor style stands out. It blends traditional art with modern technology, creating stunning, engaging spaces that inspire audiences worldwide.

What advice do you have for decor artists entering the electronic music field?

Stay true to your vision, embrace experimentation, and never stop learning. Electronic music thrives on innovation, and there’s always room for fresh and creative perspectives.

Today, we’re excited to spotlight Eulojio Ortega, a brilliant mural artist from the lively city of Chicago. He’s been painting murals for 15 years and has left his mark all over the United States with his incredible artwork, from fun designs for kids to massive masterpieces like the one at the world’s largest Starbucks. Ortega’s work isn’t just paintings; it showcases his incredible creativity and skill. What inspired you to start Ortega Studios Murals, and what’s its mission?

I started my journey as an artist twenty years ago, drawing pictures to tell stories. As time passed, I got into painting detailed portraits using oil paints, trying to show people’s beauty. Later, I also started painting landscapes and objects, aiming to improve my work.

Now, as a mural artist, I get to use everything I’ve learned to make huge artworks that make a big impact. When you look at my murals, I hope you can see my effort to make them great and feel excited to work on your mural masterpiece.

Where do you think Ortega Studios is going?

We’re looking to reach more people by working with cities focusing on revitalizing their culture. To do this, we’ll enhance our murals with technology, like augmented reality, to make them more interactive and engaging. Our main aim is to continue developing our artistic style while ensuring that we stay true to our core mission, which is to showcase the unique voices and stories of the local community through our art.

Can you walk us through your creative process?

Our creative process is a collaborative journey that begins by actively engaging with the community we work with. We listen attentively to their ideas, stories, and aspirations, which are the foundation for our artistic vision. Through interactive workshops and dialogue, we gather a wealth of inspiration that we translate into vibrant visual concepts.

Once we’ve drawn some basic ideas, we ask the community for their thoughts. This helps us make changes and improve our designs, ensuring they represent what the community stands for. After we’ve decided on the design, we carefully prepare the surface for painting. Then, using brushes and paints, we start bringing the mural to life. We add layer after layer, putting in lots of passion and creativity and ensuring every detail is correct.

Making something is like pouring our hearts into it from start to finish. Depending on how big and tricky it is, it can take weeks or even months. But every time we add a brushstroke, it’s not just about making something pretty. It’s about telling stories, sharing dreams, and bringing people together, leaving a lasting mark for years.

Can you share some highlight projects that you’ve worked on?

As a mural artist, I’ve had fun working on different projects, from painting incredible murals for kids to huge ones like the five-story mural at the most giant Starbucks in the world. Each job has its challenges and sound bits, like making a school mascot look cool or turning a library into a fantastic story place. I love making spaces awesome with art and am always up for new and exciting projects.

Some Highlight projects are below:

1). The Starbucks Reserve Roastery Mural:

One of our acclaimed works is the five-story mural inside the Starbucks Reserve Roastery on Chicago’s Magnificent Mile. Selected from a competitive field of muralists, this project allowed us to merge art with architecture, creating a landmark on Michigan Avenue.

2). Educational and Inspirational Works:

At P.H. Miller Elementary, we transformed a cafeteria into a vibrant library with engaging murals, fostering a love for reading among students. Another notable project is the Cowherd Hall School Mural in Aurora, IL, showcasing our commitment to uplifting communities through art.

What has been one of your most challenging projects, and why?

One of our most challenging projects was a San Francisco mural depicting the city’s evolution from the Gold Rush era to the tech boom. Balancing historical accuracy with artistic expression while respecting the building’s integrity was a significant challenge. Additionally, using materials suitable for the historical structure added complexity to the project.

How do you make sure your projects show the local culture and history?

We must ensure that when we work on a project, like creating a mural, it truly represents the local culture and history. We start by getting to know the community well. We do this by holding workshops and meetings to involve local people in developing ideas actively. We also learned much about the area’s history and talked to the people there. This helps us understand what’s important to them and improves our mural designs. By working together like this, the community feels like the mural belongs to them, and they feel proud of it because it reflects who they are and where they come from.

How do murals change places and communities?

Mural art can uplift communities, spark conversations, and inspire change. Through our murals, we aim to create immersive environments that resonate with people profoundly, fostering a sense of pride and belonging within their communities.

How do you engage with local residents and businesses in the mural creation process?

Collaboration is central to our work. Before we begin any project, we reach out to the community to get their input, ideas, and feedback. We ask residents to share their stories, memories, and hopes for their neighborhoods. We also team up with local businesses, schools, and organizations to make sure our murals represent the various voices and views of the community. It’s a joint effort from beginning to end, and witnessing the enthusiasm and pride people have for the final artwork is extremely fulfilling

What inspires your choice of subjects?

My subjects draw inspiration from everyday life, nature, urban scenes, and historical contexts. Whether it’s a lively street scene or an iconic mascot, I aim to evoke emotions and tell stories that resonate with viewers.

What’s been the hardest thing to do in any project you’ve worked on?

Each project presents unique technical challenges, but one of the most demanding was the world’s largest indoor car mural at Irongate in Naperville, IL. The sheer size required meticulous planning and execution to achieve the desired impact.

How did you first get into Deco art?

My journey into Black Light Arts began with a deep fascination for the psychedelic and luminescent. I grew up in the 21st century. I was lucky to have internet. It allowed me to explore art from around the world. I became enamored with the beauty of Black Light Art. I also loved Festival Decorations, NEON art, and other glowing entertainment.

What inspires your deco art creations?

My deco art creations are often inspired by many influences, ranging from the beauty of nature to the avant-garde works of pioneering artists. I find inspiration in the shapes of Art Deco architecture. I also love nature’s flow and street art’s bright colors. Artists such as Tamara de Lempicka, Georges Barbier, and Erte have also greatly influenced my art. They filled my work with timeless elegance and sophistication.

Can you share some insights into luminescent art origins and evolution?

Luminescent art has a long history. It dates back centuries to George Claude’s invention of Neon Signs in 1902 and Johann Ritter’s discovery of UV lighting in 1801. The roots of this art form run deep. In the 1930s, the Switzer brothers stumbled upon neon paint mixing potions, sparking a new era of luminescent creativity.

Luminescent art peaked in the 1960s and 1970s with Black Light Posters. But it has continued to grow thanks to better technology and platforms like the Internet.

Could you walk us through your creative process, from conception to completion?

I start with lots of research and brainstorming. I gather inspiration from many sources and make initial concepts and sketches. Once I have a clear vision, I meticulously plan the piece’s composition, color palette, and overall aesthetic. I then create the design using both traditional and digital techniques. I carefully refine each detail until the artwork is as good as possible.

How has technology changed psychedelic art and festivals?

The internet has changed how we connect, work together, and create. This is in the psychedelic decorations and festival culture. It has made it easier for organizers to book talent, connect with like-minded individuals, and research upcoming events. This accessibility has allowed the culture to flourish in previously unimaginable ways. Our reliance on technology has challenges. the benefits of connectivity and accessibility are huge.

How do these art forms remind us of our shared humanity?

Luminous art is a powerful expression of our shared humanity. It brings people together to celebrate and be friends. These art forms resonate with the essence of our unique cultures and traditions. They do so through tribal gatherings, festive celebrations, or solemn rituals. They remind us that we are all connected. They remind us of the joy of shared laughter, feelings, and celebration.

What materials and techniques do you prefer in your deco art, and why?

I utilize various techniques and materials to achieve the desired luminescent effect in my work. This includes special paints and pigments. They react to black light and contain UV-reactive fabrics and sculptures. Each piece is meticulously crafted to enhance the visual impact and create an immersive experience for the viewer.

Could you share any exciting or challenging moments from your Deco art projects?

Absolutely. I’m always drawn to pushing the boundaries of traditional art forms and exploring new ways to engage with audiences. Video mapping allows me to turn still surfaces into dynamic, interactive canvases. Fire performances add danger and excitement to the art. These unusual forms of expression challenge me to think creatively. They help me create memorable experiences for viewers.

Deco art sits in a unique place between tradition and innovation. It offers a fresh view of timeless aesthetic rules. Deco art blends past and present. It adds to modern art and design. It fills spaces with elegance, style, and a bit of nostalgia. Deco art uses bold patterns, luxurious materials, and sleek forms. It inspires and captivates audiences worldwide.

It’s a delicate balance, to be sure. I deeply respect the traditional techniques and cultural roots of luminescent art. But I also believe in the importance of innovation and evolution in art. I draw inspiration from the past, embrace new technologies and ideas, and strive to create work that is both timeless and cutting-edge.
