Wonderland Festival was Waldfrieden Events’ flagship summer psytrance gathering in the forests near Stemwede, Germany, running since 1996. As of late 2026, the festival is on hiatus following a permit dispute and the resulting insolvency of its organizer. Here’s what happened, and where things stand.
What Was Wonderland Festival?
Waldfrieden Events, whose name translates to “forest peace” in German, established Wonderland in 1996 as the flagship event at its woodland venue near Stemwede. Over nearly three decades it grew into one of Germany’s longest-running psytrance gatherings, held each August alongside its spring counterpart, Hai in den Mai.
Current Status: On Hiatus
Wonderland Festival 2026 did not take place. The Kreis Minden-Lübbecke’s lower nature conservation authority withdrew Hai in den Mai 2026’s environmental permit that spring, a decision upheld in court by the Oberverwaltungsgericht Münster, and Wonderland 2026 was unable to proceed either. Waldfrieden Events GmbH subsequently filed for insolvency, with proceedings expected to open September 1, 2026. Ticket holders can register refund claims as insolvency creditors once proceedings formally begin.
What’s Happening at the Venue Now
A separate nonprofit, Waldfrieden Kultur e.V., is independent of the insolvent company and continues to run smaller “solidarity rave” events at the site to keep Waldfrieden alive as a year-round cultural space. There is currently no confirmed date for Wonderland’s return as a full-scale festival.
The Festival’s History
Wonderland typically took place in August, transforming the Waldfrieden forest into a multi-day gathering with immersive art installations, healing spaces for yoga and sound work, and international DJ lineups spanning full-on, progressive, and darker psytrance styles.
The Waldfrieden Forest Setting
Located near Osnabrück in northwestern Germany, the venue’s natural forest clearings, ancient trees, and a river running through the property gave Wonderland an atmosphere distinct from more conventional festival grounds – part of what made it a beloved fixture for the German and international psytrance community.
